Supplemental Health Plans

Supplemental Health Plans Overview

The Aetna Supplemental Health Plans help provide an extra layer of financial protection in addition to, not as a replacement for, your medical coverage.

While medical insurance pays providers, the supplemental health plans pay you, the member, for expected — and unexpected — medical events. You decide how to use the cash — for out-of-pocket medical expenses, like your deductible or coinsurance, or for everyday expenses, like your mortgage, rent, food, transportation or childcare.

  • Critical Illness Plan

Get the highlights the easy way - just watch the video!

The Aetna Critical Illness Plan pays benefits when you are diagnosed with a wide range of specified critical illness, including heart attack, stroke, end stage renal failure and invasive cancer. It also pays partial benefits for ruptured aneurysm, bacterial meningitis, and coronary artery conditions requiring angioplasty or heart valve replacement or repair. The plan also includes benefits for recurrence and subsequent diagnoses. In addition, the plan pays a bone marrow donation surgery benefit (once per lifetime) and includes childhood critical illness diagnoses.

Rates are based on your current age and on your tobacco/nicotine usage. For more details, including exclusions and limitations, review your benefit summary in the Library on the enrollment website.

    How it works:

Donna enrolled in the Aetna Critical Illness Enhanced Plan option during Annual Enrollment.

One month following her coverage effective coverage date, she had a heart attack.

She made a Supplement Health Claim online and the plan paid her a $25,000 benefit.

  • Accident Plan

Get the highlights the easy way. Just watch the video!

Accidents happen. And when you least expect it. You can't always prevent an accident. But an Aetna Accident Plan can help you be more financially prepared for what happens next. And if you buy coverage for yourself, you can also buy coverage for your family.

Accident insurance provides cash benefits for out-of-pocket expenses if you or a covered family member has a covered accidental injury. Coverage includes an extra benefit that's paid for an injury that occurs while playing as a registered member of an organized, non-professional sport.

Benefits are in addition to medical or any other benefits you may receive and are paid directly to you unless otherwise assigned. Benefits correspond with treatment for accidental injuries, including emergency treatment, hospital stays, physical rehabilitation and therapy, medical exams and other expenses you may face, such as transportation and lodging needs. For more details, including exclusions and limitations, review your benefit summary in the Library on the enrollment website.

    How it works:

Jake signed up for the Aetna Accident Enhanced Plan option.

Shortly after his coverage started, he had a wreck on his bicycle and broke his ankle.

His plan paid him a $3,130 cash* benefit for his ER visit, X-ray, broken ankle, follow-up care, physical therapy and even his crutches.

  • Hospital Indemnity Plan

Get the highlights the easy way – just watch the video!

Whether it’s unexpected or planned, a hospital stay can create a lot of additional expenses. The Aetna Hospital Indemnity Plan can put cash in your pocket to help.

The Aetna Hospital Indemnity Plan pays benefits related to an inpatient hospital stay, including an admission benefit, intensive care unit (ICU) benefit and daily stay. Benefits are also paid for inpatient substance abuse, mental illness and rehabilitation stays. Limitations apply to the number of times a benefit is paid during a plan year. For more details, including exclusions and limitations, review your benefit summary in the Library on the enrollment website.

    How it works:

Manuel enrolled in the Aetna Hospital Enhanced Plan option during annual enrollment.

A few months after his coverage-effective date, he needed a hip replacement.

His plan paid $2,800 in cash benefits for his hospital admission, daily stay and rehabilitation.

This is a brief product overview only. The plans have limitations and exclusions that may affect benefits payable. Refer to the plans for complete details, limitations, and exclusions.

Who can enroll?

You can sign up for these plans if:

  • You are 16 or older, and

  • You are scheduled to work 12 or more hours each week.

All colleagues who meet these rules can enroll. These plans are voluntary, which means you pay for them, not the company.

You don’t need to be in a CVS Health medical plan to join, and you can cover your dependents (your spouse, domestic partner and/or children).

You have two choices for each plan:

  • Basic – lower cost, basic coverage

  • Enhanced – higher cost, stronger coverage

All plans offer special rates and payroll deduction to make paying easy.

New critical illness benefit

If your Annual Benefits Base Rate (ABBR) is under $85,000 AND you are also enrolled in a CVS Health medical plan:

You and your eligible dependents will be automatically enrolled in a $5,000 Employer-Paid Aetna Critical Illness Plan, at no cost to you.

  • Your coverage level will match your medical plan (for example: Employee + Child).

  • This plan includes a $50 health screening benefit for each covered person.

    • You can use this once per plan year.

    • You must submit a claim to receive the $50.

Helpful notes:

  • You can find your ABBR in Colleague Zone>My apps>Benefits – Your Benefit Coverage>Annual Benefits Base Rate.

  • The maximum health screening benefit is $50 per covered person per plan year, even if you have more than one test.

  • Check your Certificate of Coverage for full details.

  • Your plan year is June 1 through May 31.

  • Only dependents enrolled in a CVS Health medical plan will receive the $5K critical illness plan and be eligible for the $50 health screening benefit.

Buy-Up options for eligible colleagues

If you get the employer-paid $5K plan, you can choose to add extra critical illness insurance:

  • Basic Buy-Up: Add $10K for a total of $15K in coverage

  • Enhanced Buy-Up: Add $25K for a total of $30K in coverage

These Buy-Up plans are employee-paid, and you can cover your dependents.

Critical illness options for all other colleagues

If your ABBR is over $85,000 OR you are not enrolled in a CVS Health medical plan

You can still enroll in voluntary Aetna Critical Illness plans:

  • Basic Plan: $10,000 of employee-paid coverage

  • Enhanced Plan: $25,000 of employee-paid coverage

You may also cover your dependents.

Important Things to Remember

You can enroll or make changes:

  • When you first become eligible for benefits,

  • During annual enrollment, or

  • After a qualifying life event (like marriage or birth)

If you don’t make changes during these times, you will need to wait until the next annual enrollment.
