Changing your medical, dental, or vision coverage outside of Open Enrollment
To make a change to your medical, dental, or vision coverage outside of Open Enrollment, you must experience a qualifying life event, which is an event that affects your benefits coverage or the coverage of your dependents. Below are some examples of qualifying life events:
- Getting married or starting a new domestic partnership
- Having a baby or adopting a child
- Getting divorced or ending a domestic partnership
- Gaining or losing other coverage
- Losing a spouse/domestic partner or dependent
If you are gaining or losing other coverage, the reason for your gain or loss dictates the amount of time you have to make changes. For the following qualified life events, you must make changes within 30 days of the event date, and verification documents must be submitted within 30 days of benefits changes.
- Your spouse/domestic partner’s Open Enrollment dates differ from Iron Mountain’s.
- You, your spouse/domestic partner, or your dependent child gains coverage outside of Iron Mountain (including joining the Marketplace).
- You, your spouse/domestic partner, or your dependent child loses coverage outside of Iron Mountain.
For the following qualified life events you must make changes within 60 days of the event date, and verification documents must be submitted within 45 days of benefits changes.
- Your or your spouse’s/domestic partner’s child gains or loses coverage under a state Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP).
- You, your spouse/domestic partner, or your dependent child gains or loses Medicare or Medicaid coverage.
If you miss the deadline, you’ll have to wait until the next Open Enrollment period or another qualifying life event to make changes.

Understanding deductions for coverage changes outside of the annual enrollment period
If your benefit elections are effective on a date prior to the current pay period, you’ll incur retroactive deductions back to the effective date. These retroactive deductions will be taken from your future paychecks for the number of pay periods missed after your elections became effective until the amount owed is paid in full.
