Life Events
The benefit elections you make during Open Enrollment stay in place for the calendar year. But if your life changes unexpectedly, you may be able to update your benefits outside of Open Enrollment. These changes, called Qualified Life Events, allow you to adjust your coverage during a special enrollment period.
You must make changes within 31 days of the event. Changes must match the event, which means having a baby allows you to add your baby, but not your spouse.
All required documentation must be received no later than 31 days from the event date for your changes to be processed.
A Qualified Life Event (QLE) is a major life change that allows you to update your benefits during the year. Examples include:
Marriage
Divorce
Birth or adoption of a child
Death of a covered family member
Loss of coverage due to a job change
If you add a spouse or dependent to your coverage during a QLE, you’ll be required to provide documentation to verify their eligibility. Documentation must be submitted within 31 days of the event — no later than Day 31.
Marriage certificate
Birth certificate
Adoption paperwork
Proof of loss of other coverage
Be sure to have your documents ready; your updates won’t be approved until verification is complete.
Note: You must make changes within 31 days of the event. Changes must match the event, which means having a baby allows you to add your baby, but not your spouse. All required documentation must be received no later than 31 days from the event date for your changes to be processed.
